Labeled diagram of a monarch butterfly showing its parts

Teachers, homeschool families, and curious kids — these free printable butterfly worksheets are for you. Two sheets, zero cost, and they print beautifully at home or in the classroom: a butterfly facts sheet and a parts-of-a-butterfly labeling worksheet.

Butterfly Facts for Kids

Eight amazing facts every kid should know: a butterfly is an insect with 3 body parts, 6 legs, and 4 wings. Its wings are covered in tiny scales that make all the colors and patterns. A butterfly tastes with its feet and drinks nectar through a long straw tongue called a proboscis. Butterflies can even see ultraviolet light, so flowers look very different to them than to us. And a group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope.

Parts of a Butterfly

Can your kids name the parts of a butterfly? The labeled diagram shows all nine: antenna, head, eye, proboscis, thorax, legs, abdomen, forewing, and hindwing. Then the second page is a blank labeling worksheet with a word bank — same butterfly, empty boxes, ready to test what they learned.

The Butterfly Life Cycle

Every butterfly grows in 4 stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly. That big change is called metamorphosis. Monarchs take it further — they migrate up to 3,000 miles to reach the same forests in Mexico. If your kids want the full life cycle for each butterfly, our free printables page has a complete life cycle activity pack for monarchs, queens, swallowtails, and more.
